Volunteering With Habitat for Humanity

Today I got to do something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and checked an item off my 2018 bucket list! I spent the day volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.

Ever since an early episode of Gilmore Girls where Rory decides to help build houses in order to better her chances to get into an Ivy League school, and sets out with no experience and a pink fluffy hammer from her on, I’ve wanted to work with Habitat for Humanity.

I’m honestly not sure why it’s taken me so long, but I’m so happy I finally did it! For those that don’t know, Habitat for Humanity is an organization that helps build homes for people in need. What I didn’t realize until this weekend is that the people who will be living in these houses actually help build them as well! You are required to put 500 hours of labor into building in order to receive your house. This was awesome because we got to meet some of the people we were helping!

Our project was a neighborhood of 9 homes, all towards the end of construction. My friend and I decided to help paint the interior as I have absolutely no idea how to build thing, but I’m really good at painting!

I did learn a new skill though. The woman supervising us taught me how to caulk so I was able to fill in small whole while painting which was really fun!

Overall, I had an amazing experience and can’t wait to go back. Maybe next time I will even be brave and learn how to work with the tools (if they will let me)!
